Great performance; sub-par sound.
First off, the sound was awful. Unfortunately, the crew on Friday night apparently was not up to the challenge. Even in quiet passages, there was so much treble noise in the vocals that it was a challenge to understand. The lack of definition made the bass muddy and the vocals were incomprehensible. I've been to a great many arena shows, and I know that it is possible to make it sound good.
As excited as I was to see Modest Mouse, honestly, they could have been dropped from the program to make room for more Nine Vicious, and no one would have minded. The only possible complaint is that they didn't play longer. Nine Vicious were in fine form and absolutely rocked the house.
At the end of the night, I had a hard time deciding what was more annoying: the bad sound mix or the constant stream of people who couldn't stay in their seats for more than 30 seconds before needing the bathroom or another overpriced beer. However, we had lower level seats about 1/3 back, so I'm not talking about being in the upper reaches of the rafters.
